Our Story

Match Consultants was founded by Christian Hughes in 2005, supported by two leading industry experts , John Ratcliffe and Mike Paul, who both had run high profile wine and drinks companies.

Christian’s background is in recruitment, training and counselling and he is currently in the process of completing his qualifications to become a chartered psychologist.

He began his career in recruitment with roles based out of Asia, Australia and the UK, specialising in board level appointments for food, drinks and technology firms.

His interest in both HR and drinks businesses developed in the six years he spent working in Australia, where he gained his Wine and Spirit Educational Trust qualifications and worked for an executive search firm who served the wine industry.

Upon returning to the UK, Christian completed his counselling qualifications and opened a private counselling clinic which he still runs to this day, working with people suffering from depression and anxiety.

At the same time, he also set up Match Consultants, which aimed to provide a more structured psychological approach to recruitment in the wine and beverage industry.

Since then, the Match Consultants team has expanded rapidly, so that today the company now offers a broad range of HR services to match the needs of a modern drinks business.

From formulating and delivering individual and team training plans, through to recruitment, remuneration reviews, and HR compliance tests, we believe we offer the most comprehensive HR service available to the wine and beverage industry.
